Judy Vandermaten is a native of Iowa and has been living in the Northwest for the last twelve years. Her education and expression the photographic medium has been somewhat sporadic. Judy's interest was first sparked in high school when a friend introduced her to the darkroom process. Since then she has studied art and photography at Iowa State University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and Western Oregon State College.
Generally, Judy shoots whatever catches her eye, but that has been largely influenced by her interest in working with people and in the out-of-doors. She has slowly shifted from more of a documentary format to experimenting with "camera vision" versus "human vision," to explore elements of time and space. She has also enjoyed playing with alternative processes which have included hand coloring, color separation, and use of infra-red film to create real-world images into imaginary visions.
